Strain gauges are used to monitor strain — the deformation of a material under stress such as steel or concrete. The gauge converts this deformation into an electrical signal, which is then calibrated to represent microstrain. These instruments can be embedded within concrete or mounted and welded on steel surfaces. They help determine load distribution, stress concentration, and structural behavior in applications like tunnels, bridge decks, and pile tests.
