Melbourne Metro Project | Australia

Maxwell GeoSystems worked with CYP Design & Construction to supply the Monitoring Information Management System (MIMS) for the Metro Tunnel Project in Melbourne, Australia.

The excavation works which are now nearing completion, comprised retained station excavations, caverns and bored tunnels within the urban area. The project faced many geotechnical challenges such as excavation of two (250m-long by 30m-wide) trinocular caverns in Melbourne Formation for the State Library and Town Hall stations, 20 metres below Swanston Street, in Melbourne’s CBD.

There was a need for rapid reporting of movement and stresses to the project team in easily interpreted formats. Two of the project’s tunnel boring machines (TBMs) tunnelled for over 700 metres beneath one of the main commuter rail lines, with MissionOS performing constant geometric calculations to ensure tracks remained within the performance tolerances.

The MIMS managed over 13,000 instruments, with nearly 23 million records of data performing audit checks and calculations to ensure quality data was delivered to the relevant teams, all in real-time. MissionOS automated production of most of the analysis reports allowing a small focused team to effectively manage the works using the built-in blogging system, that produced over 50,000 pages of PDF documents per month.

Furthermore, Maxwell GeoSystems also provided InSAR processing and extraction of time series data for wider monitoring around the project alignment.
