In this latest edition of Employee Focus, we turn our attention to Dr Rohan Walker, a Geotechnics Team Leader with Maxwell GeoSystems, based out of British Columbia, Canada. He joined the company in 2018 in Australia, where he utilized his expertise in being the bridge between the engineering and computer programming worlds.

Since joining, Rohan has been involved in bringing MissionOS feature ideas into reality, along with scoping, by working closely with the programming team in its implementation. Scoping involves deep thinking about what an engineer would want from a feature; what it could become in the future; how it fits in the existing MissionOS architecture; and how to make the feature as general and configurable as possible.

Some of the areas that he has contributed towards have been in developing more thorough instrumentation models, along with writing contouring scripts for MissionOS. He’s worked on automating the extraction of BIM object location, geometry, etc, as well as automating tunnel excavation and shotcrete over-break / under-break assessments from survey locations around tunnel cross-sections and 3D tunnel scans.

With Rohan’s highly skilled Python programming skills, which were self-taught during and after his PhD studies on Ground Consolidation, he has actively been involved with Excel and Python interfaces to the MissionOS API for getting information in and out of the system.

When asked about his greatest achievement since joining the company, Rohan stated “by processing 6,000 cross-section files to produce over-break / under-break value and concrete volumes and combining the results into 3D meshes for easy viewing in MissionOS 3D”.

Rohan’s stubbornness and his “Google-ing” ability mean that he has established himself as the go-to person for complex miscellaneous engineering, GIS, and any data processing-related tasks.
