Thames Tideway Project | UK

Maxwell GeoSystems MissionOS platform was provided to Ferrovial Laing Rourke Joint Venture on the central section of the Tideway project to manage instrumentation and tunnel process control for the London Super Sewer’s Central section.

The Tideway project (in its entirety) consists of a 25km tunnel, largely under the River Thames, that will capture the tens of millions of tonnes of sewage discharged into the river each year. The scale of this project is immense, with work taking place across 24 construction sites in London, spanning from Acton in West London to Beckton in the East, with many more located on the river’s edge in the centre of the city.

The 12.5km Central section being delivered by the Ferrovial Construction Laing O Rourke JV was one of the most sensitive of all sections as it passed close to the House of Parliament, eighteen major bridges (including the iconic Tower Bridge) and a large number of cross Thames utilities such as sewers, power and rail.

The Ferrovial Construction Laing O Rourke JV relied on MissionOS to provide the platform for managing the large quantities of instrumentation data on the project, and to link this through to the progress of construction works.

With over 2,500 instruments collecting 26 million records from 2 tunnel boring machine (TBM) drives, this is considered a small job in terms of the data MissionOS is able to process. The cloud-based platform provided site staff with a variety of automated processes to evaluate when movements deviated from what might be considered normal.

This data was linked to TBM parameters to monitor progress. Further, MissionOS automated calculations to feedback to the production teams in minutes, which previously would have taken several hours to gather. In addition, the real-time 3D interface allowed engineers to evaluate the spatial and directional relationships between many dimensions of data in near real-time, aiding better understanding and communication.
